FAQ

Autism spectrum disorder is a neuro-biological disorder that impacts the development of social skills, communication skills, sensory regulation and behaviors.

Applied Behavior Analysis therapy, or ABA, is an intensive treatment to support individuals with autism. As a scientific and evidence-based approach, ABA is the single most effective treatment for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

ABA is designed to help increase a child’s quality of life by teaching developmental skills like communication, safety and play skills, (e.g. communication, social skills, play behaviors), daily living skills, transitional skills and pre-vocational skills. Through evidence-based behavioral interventions, our Autism Connections learners make significant, long-lasting improvements that empower them to connect with the world around them!

If you’ve met one individual with autism, you’ve met one individual with autism. Every autistic person is unique so we think the care they receive should be too! The ABA therapy offered at each of our Autism Connections locations is individualized to meet the needs and goals of each learner. This customized care helps lay the foundation for positive change now and in the future!

Michigan provides insurance coverage for ABA therapy as an evidence-based medical treatment for individuals with ASD. If your child needs Applied Behavioral Analysis, our team can assist you in exploring payment options.  Call to find out if we are in-network with your provider. We have limited scholarship funds available to help cover the cost of copays and deductibles for families.

Medicaid

We are contracted with Oakland, Macomb, Genesee, and Washtenaw counties to provide applied behavior analysis (ABA) for children with Medicaid at our Royal Oak, Farmington Hills, Warren, Ann Arbor, and Flint locations.

Each child’s plan is individualized based on his/her needs and treatment is delivered on a 1:1 basis by a trained Behavior Tutor who implements both the academic and social programs and behavior plan written by the board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA). Children work in classrooms alongside and with children of a similar age. This provides the perfect opportunity for them to learn and practice social skills and group learning skills to enhance learning and participation in school. Some of our specialized learning activities based on age include:

  • Daily ‘Circle Time’ for preschoolers and early elementary-age children
  • Small ‘Group Lessons’ focused on listening, following directions, and answering questions

For adolescents and young adults, the focus may be on transitional and daily living skills.  These individuals can learn skill sets that include the below, all practiced and taught in a home environment:

  • Basic pre-learner skills: looking, listening & attending to others
  • Communication skills: receptive language, imitation, verbalization (both vocal and through PECS or signs), and grammar
  • Academics: matching, reading, writing, spelling, and math
  • Functional behaviors: toilet training, community skills, and meal skills
  • Daily living skills: dressing, tooth brushing, and bathing
  • Transition skills in cooking, cleaning, and money skills
  • Decrease challenging behaviors through the use of reinforcement and environmental supports
  • Pre-vocational and vocational skills
